Are Childbirth Classes Really That Important for Expecting Parents? Should I take one while I’m pregnant?
Here is a question for you… You have to fix the shower head and you don’t quite know how to do that. Do you forge ahead and end up with a very wet mess? Or, do you read the instructions and or watch a ‘YouTube’ video to get the education of how to do it right?
Here is another question. You have to have surgery. Do you go with the Dr that hasn’t had any continuing education in the last 10 years? Or, do you decide to choose the Dr who has kept up with the latest methods out there for that procedure?
Here is another question. So you are pregnant and know that the end result is to give birth, why would you not go to a class or look up as a last resort an online class to learn how and what happens ?
It was just a couple of months ago that I attended a baby shower. The decorations were lovely. The food catered was yummy (Pinterest would be proud)! The games were actually quite fun (side note-I hate shower games) The Mommy to-be received lots of wonderful gifts that definitely will be useful when the time comes. When the end of the shower approached , attendees were starting to leave and the organizing and cleaning up started to happen I was able to have a chat with the VERY pregnant Mommy. It was great catching up and listening to all of the upcoming plans. She gave me a tour of the wonderfully appointed nursery. The only thing missing at this point was the baby! I eventually was able to ask the all important question, “So what type of Childbirth Class have you and your hubby done together to prepare for the upcoming birth?” Her answer………..well I watched something online for an hour……………….Hubby didn’t want to sit through a all day class…………………I’m having a epidural anyway!
As you can imagine, after I picked my jaw up from the floor due to astonishment I asked her, “So you are telling me you are going to ‘wing it’?” Am I missing something here? However since the shower I have done research on this very subject and even though there are a multitude of different Childbirth Education programs out there they just are not being attended. I truly believe that we need to make a huge change and create a new statement here.
*Learn about the month to month change that your body is going through and what happens to your body after the birth.
*Learn different postures that may help during the birth process
*Learn different breathing techniques- as we are all different so will be the way and how we choose to breathe through the birth process.
*Communication with your birth Partner, so they may know what your needs will be through the birth process
*SO MUCH MORE!……………………………….
Yes Childbirth Classes do take time and effort. It is part of the plan. With education you learn how the steps and process work. You learn what to do and recognize it when it happens. Education cuts the stress factor. Knowledge is always a powerful tool and we short-change ourselves when we don’t learn all that we can and should. Even if you are going to use alternative methods such as a epidural and other medical help, in these classes you learn to understand the pro’s and con’s of it and what will happen with you and your baby.
So, again I ask the question………………….”Would you repair that shower faucet without reading the instructions?”
