One of my favorite things to do is work with new infant couples/families. Be it this is your first or your fifth it doesn’t matter. Every Birth is different and every Infant is different and that’s how it goes.
Recently in my cross fit class I was discussing with another member that his wife had JUST given birth to their first baby, a very beautiful little girl. He told me that although they have done lots of planning before hand, had a great birth, and a wonderful Doula to help coach it was still a shock to both he and his wife once all was over and they were home. Why a shock? Well, no matter how much you may know and no matter how many countless videos and Youtube you watch those things are still not just you as a new family.
So as this lovely Dad was telling me all about the changes, and how he and his wife new that this would happen but yet didn’t really realize how much those changes would be. I could see the lurking stress and anxiousness in his eyes. For my part, I was able to answer with a very simple statement. “Parenting is an adventure” Like any adventure there are highs and lows, ups and downs, but always knowing in that ‘adventure’ that you are excited to see what next will happen. My new Dad liked this explanation and he could relate to it.
I also explained to my Dad how important it was for him to be a leader in the ‘Parent Adventure’. Also how learning infant massage to build more bonding with his little girl would eventually become a building block for the relationship as his daughter grows and matures. Can I say Daddy’s girl? There is nothing more beautiful to see than Dad and his baby snuggle together through the comfort of ‘touch’.
