Coastal Massage and Wellness Rooms
I am at the airport in Jacksonville North Carolina ready to go home after a weekend visit with my husband. It has been a wonderful weekend and the weather had been sunny but just that hint of chill in the air that comes with Fall. I am pretty anxious to get back home and my schedule of clients at my office however as I look out the airport windows the sky is grey and ominous of clouds. Yep this isn’t boarding well. Alas a few minutes later I hear over the loud speaker that all flights are cancelled for the rest of the day due to tornado warning. Yikes!!! I’m from sunny California- we never get any rain let alone tornado weather.
All I could hear was a collective groan from the crowd and the rush to the ticket counters to make other flight accommodations. Trust me, I could go on and on about all of that business but I don’t want to digress from my point here. When I finally was able to leave the airport in another rental car to get back to my husbands apartment I was stressed and worried about all that I needed to do back home in CA.
It didn’t take to long to reorganize myself, and call clients to reschedule and explain the delay of their appointment. Most were glad that I was able to spend a few more days with my husband (by the way, he was very glad too!!). Once that was done…………..now what? I am going to be in North Carolina for another almost two days what is it that I can do to fill time. I already have had a wonderful relaxing weekend of good food and sites , I needed to fill productive.
That’s when it hit me. Why not use this time to investigate other massage clinics in the area and see what they are doing. I have wanted to do this for quite awhile and since I have the opportunity then here I go…………..My first place to visit was “Coastal Massage and Wellness”. How did I find this place? Well it had a good location on the internet and a very clear and concise website. This read as a very interesting place to visit. It has a group of Massage Therapists that all do different modalities of work beyond the normal Swedish massage. All of them are independent contractors but worked professionally together. This is a refreshing idea to me. As a whole massage therapists are independent in their own place. Doesn’t it make more sense to band together and more opportunity to be noticed and attended by the public?
So as I was reading my list of massage modalities and techniques there popped up ‘Ashiatsu’ massage. I have read about this method through the years although I have never had the opportunity. What is ‘Ashiatsu’ massage? It is a foot massage! The client is on a normal massage table and the Therapist is literally standing on the table holding onto two long overhead bars for balance and using primarily her feet to push, prod, place deep pressure in all areas of the body. “Jesse ” was my massage therapist and specialized in this method of work. I did ask her why she liked this type of work? Her answer was that it was more pressure and deep tissue work that can be done without stressing the arms and hands. Boy howdee was it!!
Like any massage routine I lay face down on a heated (it is fall weather) massage table and then Jesse came in . Once all bolsters are positioned properly we are set to go. I feel her climb gracefully on top of the table and we begin. Did I mention that it was deep work? Jesse did remind me that if I needed less pressure to let her know so our communication was good. I do have to say that I found the massage to be quite enjoyable. Using her feet the way she did gave Jesse more opportunity to myofascially work the tissue and muscle longer and with deeper movements. Trust me when I say that everything popped, relaxed, released all over the place!
Their was a choice of length of massage for 30, 60, 90 min. price adjusted accordingly. Would I do it again? Sure!!! Was there something about the type of work that was missing? Yes but really not much and I am sure that would be up for debate. For me as a whole it was a great massage. What I felt through the whole experience was though a detachment between the therapist and myself. I like the idea of saving our wrists and hands for sure but I truly felt that there was a lacking sense of ‘feeling’ in the method. Meaning that ‘feeling’ with your hands the hot and cold areas, loose and tight patterns, hard and soft tissue and muscle, as well as the nurturing massage feeling.
Would I go again? Absolutely!!
On a scale of 1-5 I give Coastal Massage and Wellness a 5!
Location- 5 Good parking and right off a busy public area of shopping. As well as easy to find.
Interior- 5 The interior decorating was warm , colorful, and inviting. There were products to be sold as well as fun jewelry and the like to entice.
Massage Room- 5 Jesse’s room was clean and warm and relaxing to be in. The colors were also inviting and made you want to stay for hours more.
Booking- 5 I was impressed with Coastal’s booking system. There was one main person who took calls and passed appointment opportunities on to available times of the other therapists. Regular clients could always book again with the Therapist of their choice.
Cost $- 5 Cost of treatment was reasonable. I had booked a 90 min session and was pleased that I had.
